Red Dead Redemption 2 takes place in 1899. Dutch's gang, after a disastrous raid on a sea vessel, goes into hiding, abandoning their fortune in another town. Realizing that the golden age of banditry is drawing to a close, they decide to embark on one last escapade and secure enormous sums of money, enough to live a quiet and happy life. The gang decides to rob a train belonging to Leviticus Cornwall, a local magnate. Afterward, Cornwall hires a specialized squad to capture the robbers. Dutch and his companions meet with the agents, which leads to a shootout. The central character, whom the player controls, is a member of Dutch's gang, Arthur Morgan. The gang consists of about twenty members, some of whom are characters from the previous game. The player can freely roam the open world. The map will require gradual exploration to use fast travel or markers. The location is divided into several regions, including approximately five large cities, a winter and temperate biome, large forests, swamps, highlands, and a desert. The game features an honor meter. Helping strangers, taking advantage of their generosity, and being selfless count as benevolent acts. Killing civilians, committing robberies, or engaging in cruelty gradually depletes honor.
