Metro 2033 Redux features an original story and additional content: new secret locations, monster lairs, enemies, and an updated weapon upgrade system. Seven single player missions and two difficulty modes Spartan and Survival, have been added. Both require the player to be attentive, react quickly, and strategically manage ammunition. Metro 2033 Redux's graphics differ from the original with improved animation, volumetric textures, and shaders. The graphics appear sharper and more realistic, providing a truly immersive post apocalyptic experience.
The action takes place in Moscow, devastated by a nuclear disaster. The surface is contaminated with radiation, forcing survivors to hide in the metro. Life underground is also unsafe, as mutated monsters find loopholes and infiltrate shelters to prey on the bunker dwellers. Radiation levels at some stations are so high that the protagonist, Artyom, is forced to carry a gas mask. The protagonist's valuable equipment includes a wristwatch that displays the status of his gas mask. The wear and tear of the protective mask is indicated by cracks in the glass surface and the character's heavy breathing. There is no health indicator: the game alerts to injuries and intoxication with blood splashes and hallucinations, which Artyom, having absorbed radiation, periodically experiences.
