Max Payne is set in New York City, revealing the dark side of the city. The hero of this adventure shooter is a former cop, a police officer who finds himself on the wrong side of the law after gangsters murder his family. His thirst for revenge leads him to confront those responsible for the deaths of his loved ones, and now, for him, there is no law except just retribution. The game itself has become the most spectacular in the history of the genre thanks to its bullet time, or slo mo, features that slow down time during shootouts, providing maximum cinematic impact. The story is presented in a graphic novel format.
Max Payne is an ordinary police officer who works diligently to maintain order in the metropolis. While saving many innocents, he fails to protect his own family from criminals. Returning from duty, he discovers his wife and child murdered by acid addicts taking Valkyrie. The protagonist desperately tries to find the culprits. Two years of work in the drug enforcement department pay off, and Max finds the killers' trail. The protagonist sets out to apprehend them, but the gangsters fight back, forcing the cop to engage in a shootout using his Beretta. During the battle, the young man pursues his enemies through the subway, city streets, a hotel, a drug den, and even a secret lab. He soon realizes that more powerful figures than the city's mafia boss are involved in a powerful evil corporation.
The player can wield two guns simultaneously during shootouts, a first for similar games, and the slow motion and hardcore style have become a benchmark for shooters. Even on the easiest difficulty, Payne takes damage from numerous enemies with an impressive arsenal. Bosses are also present in the shooter, and soon the player will face the main antagonist, Rico Muerte. The hero's weaponry includes nine guns, two of which are a Beretta and an Ingram that can be dual wielded, as well as Molotov cocktails and grenades. There's close quarters combat, which utilizes an iron pipe and a baseball bat. After firing, there's a barely noticeable pause. Bullet Time is the character's ability to slow down time at any given moment. This ability consumes a special gauge and is replenished by killing enemies.
